Access to the TX4, like all its predecessors, stands for access for all. Every TX4 is equipped with an integral wheelchair ramp, and an extensive range of accessible features.

An improved induction loop and intercom system, a rear seat belt harness with adjustable shoulder strap to accommodate younger and smaller passengers, easy grip and high visibility grab handles, together with the seat edging in colour contrast material for people with visual impairment.

Built specifically to meet the latest Euro IV emissions legislation, the VM Motori R 425 DOHC is the cleanest diesel engine ever to beat at the very heart of a LTI taxi. Cleaner and greener with no compromise in economy or power.

Designed by Europe’s leading diesel engine specialist specifically for the TX4, the high torque delivery at low speed means you can pull away from a standing start quickly and comfortably, a feature fundamental to taxi operation.

Packs a punch
As you put your foot down, there is no disappointment. The R 425 DOHC effortlessly pulls you up to cruising speed and keeps you there quietly and smoothly as gear driven twin balance shafts within the engine reduce vibration to a minimum.
With four valves per cylinder and common rail multi-stage fuel injection technology it packs a punch never before experienced in a purpose-built taxi.
Working in perfect harmony with the new electronic engine management system, optimum engine performance is achieved as information is seamlessly relayed from the driver to the engine and transmission.

Extensively tested
Finally it is all put to the test. The extensive road and track testing means that you can expect mile after mile of trouble free motoring. The VM Motori R 425 DOHC is the most stringently tested and reliable engine we have ever had.

Engine

VM Motori 2,499 cc R 425 DOHC four cylinder, 16 valve twin overhead camshaft, direct injection turbo and intercooled. Bore/stroke 92 x 94 mm, compression ratio 17.5:1. Max power 75 kW at 4000 rpm. Max torque 240 Nm at 1800 rpm. Toothed belt drive to overhead camshafts and high pressure fuel supply pump. Electronically controlled common rail diesel fuel system, electronic engine management and cold start glow plugs. Passive anti-theft system (PATS). Electrically driven cooling fan.
Transmission
Manual gearbox and clutch

Eaton 5-speed (FSO 2405 A) all synchromesh floor shift. Hydraulic clutch operation. Ratios: 1st 4.08, 2nd 2.29, 3rd 1.47, 4th 1.00, 5th 0.72, Reverse 3.79
Automatic gearbox

5-speed electronically controlled with floor mounted cable operated shift lever. Transmission cooler integral with radiator. Ratios: 1st 3.00, 2nd 1.67, 3rd 1.00, 4th 0.75, 5th 0.67, Reverse 2.21

Rear axle

Semi floating with hypoid bevel gears ratio 4.1:1.
Suspension and steering

Independent, double wishbone front suspension with coil springs and telescopic dampers. Coil rear springs with trailing arms and panhard rod. Power assisted steering. Maximum turning distance between walls 8.53 m (28 ft). 5JKx16 wheels with 175R16C Q speed rating (6PR) tyres. One piece wheel covers.
Brakes

Servo assisted front/rear split hydraulic system with electronically controlled anti-lock braking system (ABS). Ventilated front discs 278 mm (10.9 in.) diameter with four piston callipers. Self adjusting rear drum brakes 254 x 70 mm (10 x 2.75 in). Cable operated handbrake to rear drums.
Body

All steel, four door six light body mounted on separate cruciform steel chassis. Bolt on front panels, front and rear wings. Electrocoat body protection, wax injected body and chassis. Central division between driver’s and passenger’s compartment with attack resistant acrylic screen.

Foam reinforced front and rear bumpers mounted on steel armatures. Central door locking (ignition and radio key). Automatic motion sensitive passenger compartment door locks. Tinted glass, laminated windscreen and heated rear screen. Electrically operated windows in front and rear doors. Electrically heated and adjustable door mirrors.
Internal features

Height/tilt/rake adjustable driver’s seat with plain velour trim. ‘A’ frame head restraint and lap and diagonal seat belt. Centre console with arm rest, cup holder and cubby box. Stowage net on centre division. Front door trims incorporate document pockets. Fire extinguisher. Five seat rear compartment trimmed with easy clean PVC or cloth option. Forward facing rear seat incorporates armrest and has three lap & diagonal seat belts. Centre belt is adjustable to suit children down to 18 kg; two fold down rear facing seats with lap/diagonal seat belts, left hand occasional seat swivels to assist entry for passengers with limited movement. Additional removable step used at left hand rear door (stored in boot). Wheelchair access and restraint system with seat belt. Integral wheelchair access ramp at left hand rear door. Rear door trims incorporate ash trays and positions for a fare chart and cab number plate. Yellow grab handles fitted to rear doors and quarter trims.
Electrical equipment and instrumentation

Alternator, 12 V heavy duty battery and pre-engaged starter. Halogen headlights (level adjustable by switch) incorporating parking lights, direction indicators with side mounted repeaters, rear lamp clusters incorporating brake, direction indicators, reversing and rear fog guard lights. High level rear stop light. Rear number plate illuminating lights. Driver’s compartment interior and low level facia lamp. Passenger’s compartment delay fade interior, courtesy and sill lamps. Courtesy lamp in boot. Hire sign. Exterior door handle light linked to meter operation. Speedometer with digital odometer and trip meter, fuel and temperature gauges. Warning lights for direction indicators, headlamp high beam, braking system, windscreen washer reservoir low level, low oil pressure, low fuel, battery charge, glow plug operation, motion door locks operation, passenger door open.

Column switches for 2-speed windscreen wipers, intermittent wipe, windscreen washers and rear wash/wipe: direction indicators, headlamp main beam, headlamp flash. Horn push on steering wheel.

Facia mounted switches for headlight level adjustment, hazard warning, heated rear screen, front fog lights (where fitted), rear fog guard lights, driver’s and passengers interior lamps, mirror adjustment, facia panel illumination, intercom system on/off and volume adjustment. Overhead console with digital clock and taximeter (where fitted). Interior rear view mirror. Door switches for front electric windows, central and independent front door locking. Console override switches for passenger compartment heater, rear door windows. Separate control panel for heaters and driver’s air conditioning (where fitted).

Front/ rear intercom equipment with hearing aid loop around passenger compartment. Power outlet. Illuminated gear selector (automatic). Provision for radio/cassette or radio/cassette and CD player. Wiring for telecommunications equipment.

Passenger compartment switches for rear heater on/off and two speeds, interior lights and intercom on/off.
