7 Series

The 2010 BMW 7-Series ranks 4 out of 6 Super Luxury Cars. This ranking is based on our analysis of 28 published reviews and test drives of the BMW 7-Series, and our analysis of reliability and safety data.

The BMW 7-Series is the athlete of the super luxury class. A car for those who love to drive, it offers the handling balance of a sport sedan in the body of a luxury cruiser.

The BMW 7-Series was redesigned just last year, but the new car appeared fairly late in the year, so even some BMW loyalists aren’t very familiar with the new design. It carries into 2010 unchanged.

It’s been a critical hit. With balanced lines, it’s a graceful looking car — something that not many said about the previous-generation 7-series. Its sleek exterior houses an interior filled with advanced electronics and comfortable expanses of leather.

But the best seat in any BMW is the driver’s seat, and the 7 is no exception. Technological advances like driver-adjustable chassis tuning and four-wheel steering make this the most athletic 4,500-pound luxury car on the market. Choosing one super-luxury car over another is now primarily a matter of taste. The BMW exudes an air of performance that most of its rivals don’t match, but they’re all extraordinary cars.

No other sedan unites such extraordinary qualities so effortlessly. The new BMW 7 Series has a striking road presence. Yet it is light-footed and agile like none other. It offers seemingly limitless resources of muscular power. Yet it has an understated elegance and discerning style that makes it unique. It presents a far-reaching redefinition of the driving experience. Yet the new 7 Series is 100% pure, unmistakable BMW. Discover the new BMW 7 Series: the best driving luxury sedan.

Imposing at the front, powerful at the rear, the BMW 7 Series Sedan is a vehicle that exudes confidence. The large kidney grilles emphasize the new BMW 7 Series’ imposing presence while the striking shoulder line extends uninterrupted from bonnet to boot, making the car seem longer. The door handles are integrated seamlessly into this shoulder line, creating an inimitable effect even at night.

Generous space, precise elegance and charming functionality form the character of the BMW 7 Series Sedan. The interior’s finish, including a wide range of high-class materials and a handcrafted look, conveys a new interpretation of inviting modernity. A particularly eye-catching feature of the cockpit is the instrument cluster with black panel technology - when not in use, the display is matt black, and it comes to life in several stages when the ignition is started. High-tech, special ceramic material is also offered as an option on selected control elements and switches.

It’s the attention to detail that makes a good car a great one. Details that drivers know how to appreciate like the BMW 7 Series Sedan’s ergonomic concept. With the position of the centre console rising up slightly towards the driver, all functions are positioned on the driver’s side while all comfort functions are arranged further towards the middle to give the entire passenger compartment a clear and functional structure. Appropriately separated from one another, the function buttons for cruise control are on the one side and the control elements for the audio system and telephone are on the other.
An optional feature in the BMW 7 Series Sedan, Head up display presents important information - speed, navigation directions and alerts - directly in the driver’s field of vision. The information is projected via the windscreen into the driver’s field of vision, thus minimizing distraction. The virtual image appears approximately two metres away, at the end of the bonnet. The driver’s attention stays on the road ahead and the eye strain of repeated refocusing is eliminated.
Driving in the dark becomes a more relaxing experience with BMW night vision. This optional system reveals objects up to 300 metres ahead of the vehicle, thanks to an infrared camera that transmits images to the control display, BMW is the world’s first car maker to offer person detection. Intelligent algorithms look specifically for pedestrians shown in yellow in the video. Should the system detect any danger to individual persons, the driver receives an additional warning on the Control Display or optional Head-up display.
A revolutionary new driver assistance system, the Speed Limit Info keeps the driver informed of the maximum permissible speed at all times. A camera fitted near the interior mirror permanently monitors the signs by the road as well as variable speed limit signs on overhead displays. If it is raining or the restrictions only apply at night, the intelligent system checks with the rain sensors and clock before reacting.
Surround View reveals new perspectives. Two front-end cameras are integrated in the front bumper, one on the left and one on the right, to provide an advanced view at crossroads and on narrow roads. The images obtained, transmitted to the control display, allow you to identify any oncoming traffic before it can be seen from the driver’s position. Two additional cameras in the wing mirrors monitor the side areas and also generate a bird’s eye view image of the BMW 7 Series Sedan for optimum vision in tight manoeuvres. The Rear View camera also provides welcome support when parking. Interactive lane lines in the image inform the driver whether or not the parking space is large enough.

No matter what speed you’re travelling at or road surface you’re driving on, you’re guaranteed outstanding driving comfort in the BMW 7 Series Sedan. The new shock absorbers send information four hundred times a second to the Dynamic Damping Control system and are now infinitely and independently adjustable for both compression and rebound damping. This means that the dampers adapt to the state of the road irrespective of which Dynamic Driving Control mode is selected, for exceptional ride comfort even when driving hard on bumpy surfaces.
